First Snow

You would never have thought on Monday morning that snow was coming. The morning and early afternoon temperatures were in the mid/low 60s with warm winds. But in the late afternoon, the temperature dropped 20 degrees within two hours.

I woke up Tuesday morning to 33 degrees and a gentle rain, followed by a light snow flurry that lasted 1/2 hour or less.

The dogs were less than amused about going outside for a body break. We had to carry them downstairs to the backyard. Our smallest dog, Picasso, wanted to have nothing to do with a sweater, despite the cold. He broke the doggie short distance speed record sprinting back inside.

Audrey, our diva dog, wouldn't stay outside at all until she found a pear blown down by the previous day's wind. She held one back paw up in disdain of the weather while devouring the treat.

Tony finally abandoned his shorts and Hawaiian shirts for jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a sweatshirt. You can take the man out of California, but taking California out of the man is another story.

By Tuesday late afternoon, the temperature fell to 30 degrees, and the wind blew the snow sideways. It wasn't a white-out, but the weather definitely was flexing its muscles. Picasso begrudgingly agreed to wear a sweater but tried to rub it off against the house. I had to take his sweater off before he was willing to come inside. Audrey defaulted to her normal behavior of inside doggedness.

The lawns were covered with snow Tuesday night, a startling white that reflected the street lights and turned the night to day.

This morning was a brisk 22 degrees. Picasso agreed to wear a sweater. He even let me put booties on his paws, which mysteriously all fell off by the time I put on the last one. The dog is a miracle. I had to carry him downstairs to the backyard (surprise), but after the first attempt to run inside, he tromped around in the snow and decided it wasn't such a bad thing.

Our first snow will disappear later today - temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s. But until then, I plan to drink a warm cup of coffee and enjoy our Wyoming winter wonderland.
